In 2000 we finally realized our dream of
having a small piece of property to afford us the space
and privacy we craved. The initial use for our little
"farm" was as a place to keep our horses where we could
enjoy living with and caring for them ourselves.
Soon we realized that, as retirement drew closer, we now
had the place to raise
"something" that could supply us with an additional
income and still allow us the lifestyle we wanted. The
question was....what?
Several of our neighbors were growing wine grapes and
olives for oil. There are also
orchards with nuts and fruit trees just down the road.
Others were raising meat and/or
dairy goats. We investigated each of these
possibilities but none seemed a perfect fit. |

Then, one evening, we saw an Alpaca ad on
TV. Wow! They were so beautiful and looked so
sweet....but wait....those things Spit, don't they?
After visiting several local farms, we realized that
these lovely and gentle creatures were a perfect fit for
the lifestyle we were hoping to develop.
Recently, we "discovered" that llamas, which also
intrigued us, came in a more manageable mini/small size
so we added llamas to our farm.
We are on our way. Living with alpacas and llamas is
truly a pleasure. We continue to
meet wonderful and interesting people and are never
bored. On those rainy days when
there seems nothing to do, I am happily plotting the
next breeding that will hopefully produce that near
perfect alpaca or llama that is the dream.
Thank you for visiting. |
